Leg pain caused by issues in the spine represents a complex medical condition, most commonly defined in clinical practice as lumbosacral radiculitis, or more commonly known as sciatica. Although patients primarily feel discomfort in the hip, thigh, calf, or foot, the source of the problem is almost always located in the lumbar (lower back) region of the spine. The spinal column, as the central supporting system of the body, bears the greatest load in its lower segments, making the vertebrae and intervertebral discs in this area particularly susceptible to degenerative changes and injuries.
Anatomically, the nerve structures that emerge from the spinal cord in the lumbar region converge into the longest nerve in the human body – the sciatic nerve. When biomechanical balance is disrupted, whether due to disc herniation or spinal canal narrowing, this nerve is compressed, causing “burning” sensations along the nerve fibers and transmitting pain signals down the entire leg.
Understanding this cause-and-effect relationship is essential in the Focus Physical Therapy Center, as only by precisely targeting the lumbar region can we permanently relieve pain manifesting in the lower limbs, while preventing the development of serious neurological deficits and muscle atrophy.
The symptomatology of leg pain caused by spinal issues is highly specific and most often manifests unilaterally (in one leg), although in more severe cases it can affect both lower limbs. Discomfort rarely remains confined to a single area; it tends to spread and vary in intensity depending on body position, movement, or even actions such as coughing and sneezing, which are clear signs of mechanical pressure on the nerve root.
The most common symptoms include:
Early and accurate recognition of these symptoms is crucial for the rehabilitation process. At Focus Physical Therapy Center, we conduct detailed observations of all sensations to determine the exact level of the spine where the damage has occurred.
The etiology of leg pain originating from the spine is multifactorial, with modern sedentary lifestyles playing a dominant role. Prolonged sitting at a computer, insufficient physical activity, and improper lifting of heavy objects lead to premature aging of spinal structures, creating a foundation for the development of radicular pain.
The main causes of leg pain include:
Identifying the exact cause allows us at Focus Physical Therapy Center to address the source of the problem directly, rather than merely alleviating symptoms in the legs.
The treatment approach at Focus Physical Therapy Center is comprehensive and individualized, focused on nerve decompression and restoration of spinal function. Our goal is to avoid surgical interventions whenever possible, utilizing the most advanced methods of non-invasive physical medicine.
The rehabilitation process includes:
Continuous application of these procedures at Focus Physical Therapy Center not only eliminates pain but also significantly improves spinal posture, preventing the recurrence of symptoms.
Why do you feel pain in your leg if the problem is actually in your back?
This happens because the main nerves that provide sensation and strength to your legs originate directly from the spine. When the disc between two vertebrae slips or degenerates, it can physically compress the nerve. Your brain then receives a pain signal from the part of the leg that the nerve "supplies," even though the pressure remains in the lower back. It’s similar to pressing a garden hose at one end and noticing that the water stops flowing at the other end.
Why does my leg hurt but my back doesn't?
This is a common occurrence with herniated discs. The nerve transmits pain signals to distant parts of the body (leg), while the patient may not feel any discomfort at the point of pressure (back).
Is surgery the only solution for leg pain from the spine?
In more than 90% of cases, adequate and timely physical therapy can successfully resolve the problem without the need for surgery.
How long does recovery at the Focus Physical Therapy Center take?
Significant relief is often felt after the first few treatments, while a cycle of 10 to 12 treatments is usually required to stabilize the condition.
Can exercises make the condition worse?
If exercises are performed incorrectly or without professional supervision, they can worsen nerve compression. That is why it is crucial that exercises are performed under the supervision of our experienced physiotherapists.
