Sciatica
A term
Sciatica (lumbar radiculitis) is pain that occurs along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, through the hips and buttocks, to each leg. It usually affects only one side of the body.
How does it occur?
Sciatica most often occurs when a part of the spine presses on a part of the nerve. This can be caused by a herniated disc, bone spurs on the vertebrae, or a narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis). Other causes may include injuries, tumors, or diseases such as diabetes that affect the nerves.
Symptoms
Symptoms of sciatica include:
- Pain in the lower back, buttock or leg, which can be mild, sharp, burning or extremely severe.
- Numbness or weakness in the leg or foot.
- Tingling or tingling along the nerve pathway.
- Worsening of symptoms when sitting, coughing or sneezing.
Treatment
Treatment for sciatica may include:
- Conservative methods: Rest, application of ice or heat, physical therapy, exercises for stretching and strengthening the muscles of the back and abdomen.
- Medicines: Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), muscle relaxants, pain relievers or steroids.
- Injections: Epidural steroid injections can help reduce inflammation around the nerve.
- Surgery: In more severe cases, when conservative methods do not help, surgery may be needed to relieve pressure on the nerve.
Physical therapy of sciatica
Physical therapy is a key component in the treatment of sciatica. Therapy may include:
- Stretching exercises: Helps reduce pressure on the nerve.
- Strengthening exercises: Strengthening your back and abdominal muscles can help prevent future injuries.
- Manual therapy: Techniques such as massage or spinal manipulation can help reduce pain and improve mobility.
- Heat or cold therapy: Applying heat or ice can help reduce pain and inflammation.
