Pain in the heel occurs as a result of excessive straining of the foot after prolonged walking, standing, intensive physical activities) wearing uncomfortable shoes (ballet shoes, flat shoes) or as a result of microinjuries and chronic inflammation of the plantar fascia.
A heel spur is caused by the deposition of calcium salts in the heel. Calcium deposits form a bony protrusion on the underside of the heel bone. The heel spur is formed due to excessive load on the foot muscles and ligaments, chronic inflammation of the plantar fascia. The process of calcium deposition lasts several months.
If the heel spur irritates the surrounding tissue, the pressure causes pain. The pain can be acute or chronic, and it can be accompanied by a feeling (sensation) of heat in the area of the heel.
Acute pain in the heel - this is a sudden, intense and stabbing pain in the heel that occurs as a result of standing for a long time, awkwardly getting up from the side of the bed or sitting for a long time.
Chronic pain in the heel - is pain of a lower intensity that occurs gradually when walking and lasts throughout the day.
The causes of heel spurs can be wearing uncomfortable shoes, excessive obesity, stress on the feet due to sports, or serious rheumatic diseases. The pain usually occurs on the underside of the heel (on the sole of the foot), and sometimes on the back. That pain in the lower part of the heel is usually inflammation of the tendon sheath, along the entire foot, or plantar fascia, and plantar fascitis or heel spur is the name of the disease that affects the lower part of the heel bone.
Heel spurs are successfully treated without surgery. Resting in the heel spur immediately solves the problem, because the pain in the heel returns and intensifies when the person stands up.
Depending on the case and the severity of the problem, the following can be useful in the treatment of heel spurs: special stretching exercises, analgesics, ice packs, orthopedic insoles that provide support and reduce pain (insoles with perforated heel).
Physical therapy acts locally and treats the cause of the pain. By applying physical therapy, calcifications in the heel are removed. One of the most effective methods of treating heel spurs is shockwave therapy.
Shockwave therapy is an acoustic therapy (sound) that has its own frequency (in Hz) and strength (in bars). This is an absolutely safe and reliable method for treating heel spurs and heel pain.
The treatment itself can be a bit painful. The intensity of shockwave therapy is strictly controlled and determined individually. It encourages tissue regeneration, stimulates better circulation, causes the breakdown of calcium and promotes vascularization.
As part of the physical therapy used to treat heel spurs and heel pain, the following can be used: laser therapy, underwater ultrasound, electrotherapy, tecar therapy, cryotherapy (cryotherapy), etc.
Manual therapy also helps with heel spurs, as do foot strengthening exercises.
Who most often has heel spurs?
Heel spur most often occurs in:
It has been proven that heel spurs occur more often in older people. The pads in the heel wear out, they lose their ability to effectively absorb juice.
How long does heel spur treatment take?
The treatment of heel spur lasts from 3-5 treatments, although it is an individual matter. Shockwave therapy lasts a short time, but it is necessary to combine it with other forms of physical therapy for the fastest and most efficient recovery of the patient. Shoskwave therapy is done every other day.
How is the existence of a heel spur determined?
The presence of a heel spur is determined by X-ray.
