Physical therapy

Are you struggling with pain in your back, shoulder, spine, arm, leg, foot, or knee? Almost everyone has experienced some form of these pains at least once in their life. The causes of these pains can vary. Herniated discs and sciatica, shoulder pain, and foot or knee pain are common conditions that we successfully treat at Focus Physical Therapy.

A herniated disc is a condition of the spinal column that occurs due to changes in the disc—a small intervertebral "cushion." These changes are often due to degenerative processes, and a herniated disc can also result from an injury. Herniated discs primarily affect people in their most productive years, between the ages of 35 and 45, equally impacting both men and women.

Sciatica (sciatalgia) is a collection of symptoms resulting from compression of one of the five spinal roots that together form the sciatic nerve, or from inflammation of the sciatic nerve. This is the longest nerve in the human body. If you suffer from sciatica, the pain typically appears suddenly and is present in the lower back, buttocks, and down one leg, often accompanied by tingling.

Shoulder pain can result from calcification, which is the buildup of calcium in the rotator cuff tendons. Additionally, shoulder pain can be due to a rotator cuff injury. Rotator cuff tears are more common in older adults but can also occur in younger individuals, particularly athletes. Shoulder pain is one of the most common reasons people seek physical therapy. It often occurs at night, and is frequently associated with pain in the biceps tendon at the front of the shoulder or the supraspinatus tendon at the top of the shoulder.

Knee pain is most often caused by sports activities. Overstretching of ligaments during a poor landing can lead to serious knee injuries. Ligament injuries occur when the stability of the knee joint is exceeded. Sudden changes in direction while running, landing, and similar actions can result in a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

Gonarthrosis is a degenerative knee joint condition characterized by cartilage degradation. The main symptom of gonarthrosis is knee pain that occurs during movement, especially when walking up or down stairs. Patients experience knee pain, and swelling may later develop.

Knee swelling is a typical symptom resulting from the accumulation of excess fluid in the knee joint. Knee osteoarthritis is one potential cause of this fluid buildup, fundamentally stemming from an inflammatory process in the knee.
