Pain in the elbow
The most common causes of elbow pain include:
1. Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis): This condition is characterized by pain in the outer part of the elbow. It occurs as a result of overuse of the forearm muscles, often from repetitive motions such as tennis shots or other motions that stress the elbow.
2. Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis): Similar to tennis elbow, golfer's elbow causes pain on the inside of the elbow. This condition also results from overuse of the muscles and tendons in the area, which can result from repetitive motions such as golf or other activities.
3. Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa in the elbow area can cause pain and swelling. Bursae are fluid-filled sacs that help reduce friction between tendons, muscles, and bones, and inflammation can result from overuse or injury.
4. Nerve Compression: Nerve compression in the elbow area can cause pain, tingling and weakness in the hand and fingers. An example of this is cubital tunnel syndrome, which occurs when the ulnar nerve is compressed as it passes through the cubital tunnel in the elbow area.
5. Fractures: Injuries such as broken bones in the elbow area can also cause pain.
6. Osteoarthritis: Degenerative joint disease can also affect the elbow, which can cause pain and limited mobility.
7. Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendons in the elbow area can be caused by excessive strain or repetitive movements.
These are just some of the possible causes of elbow pain, and an accurate diagnosis requires a medical evaluation by a specialist such as an orthopedic doctor or physical therapist. Our team is always ready to examine you, suggest imaging if necessary and, based on additional consultations, determine therapies that will help you get rid of elbow pain.
Physical therapy for treating elbow pain can include a variety of techniques and methods, and some of the most common include:
1. Strengthening and stretching exercises: Specific exercises designed to strengthen the muscles of the forearm, upper arm, and shoulder girdle can help stabilize and support the elbow joint. Also, stretching exercises can help relax tight muscles and tendons.
2. Massage: Massage can help relax muscles, improve blood circulation and reduce pain. Different massage techniques can be used depending on the patient's condition and symptoms.
3. Electrotherapy: Techniques such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) or electrical muscle stimulation can be used to reduce pain and improve muscle function in the elbow area.
4. Ultrasound therapy: Ultrasound therapy can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain in the elbow area. This technique uses high-frequency sound waves to penetrate tissue and stimulate the healing process.
5. Cold and heat therapy: Applying ice can help reduce swelling and inflammation, while applying heat can relax muscles and improve blood circulation. These therapies are usually applied alternately depending on the patient's condition and the therapist's recommendations.
6. Joint mobilization techniques: A physical therapist can use various mobilization and manipulation techniques to improve elbow mobility and reduce pain.
These treatments are often combined to achieve the best possible result and ease the patient. It is important that the therapy is individually adapted to the needs and condition of each patient. Call us and successfully get rid of elbow pain.
